Chapter 1 / 6

Conflict, tempo and the human mind

Editor’s introduction

How can we act effectively when an opponent is also observing, adapting and trying to defeat us? Boyd begins with fighter-aircraft design, where combat exposed problems that theory alone could not explain. From there he broadens the inquiry to conflict beyond warfare and introduces the observation–orientation–decision–action cycle. His opening remarks explain the method: examine the same problem from several angles, take ideas apart and recombine them, rather than look for a single formula.
