Chapter 2 / 6

Historical patterns: Sun Tzu to Napoleon

Editor’s introduction

Boyd now tests the ideas introduced through air combat against a much longer history of conflict. Beginning with Sun Tzu, he examines ancient battles, Mongol campaigns and Napoleon’s methods, asking how commanders create advantages beyond superior numbers. The battle drawings help trace movements, but his interest extends to their effects on an opponent’s understanding and resolve. These are historical snapshots through which he develops comparisons, not a continuous military history.
